A Tutorial on Moving islands in FSW and possibly FSX

Post by ddavid on Tue Oct 31, 2017 10:12 pm

I wanted an island for a mission in Flight Sim World (FSW). It needed to be near Fiji, but the local islands were too big, wrong shape, etc. So, I thought, can I move one? Well, dear reader, read on:

    1. I Chose a small island south east of Fiji - here's the FSET capture page with a Plan-G inset:

    2. Made the photoscenery bgl in the usual way. Here's a comparison between FSET and Google Earth for location:

    3. I wanted an island west of Tonga so I chose an area 2 x 3, as before, and made the files with FSET:

    4. Next I made the bmps for photo and mask for the Tonga island the same as the Fiji bmps:

    5. Made the photoscenery bgl for new island using resampleFSXSP2

    6. Placed the bgl in FSW's Addon Scenery\scenery folder:

    7. Fired up Annotator for some jungle autogen, made the agn file and placed in FSW's Addon Scenery\texture folder:

    8. And here's the result in FSW:

Not really rocket science, but pushing back the boundaries a bit...

All I need now is a landing strip  - ADE, here I come!

    Cheers - Dai. Cool

I take it David that as fsw is really a modified fsx that this would also work in FSX?

Yes - although I haven't checked as such - FSW's structure is almost exactly the same as FSX. so popping a bgl into ...\AddonScenery\scenery (or an agn into ...\Addon Scenery\texture) does the trick. Adding a scenery in a named folder is a bit more complex as you have to update the FSW scenery.cfg file as opposed to enabling it in the FSX scenery library. I'll post a more thorough explanation as a tutorial when I can.

When you have time David it would be good to read what benefits if any have you seen in FSW compared to FSX, thank you in advance. Cheers Mike.

The procedure works fine in FSX as well. Here's the completed project - West Tonga Island - complete with airfield buildings and runway c/o ADEX:
